The Cultivated, the Introverted, and Fashion Photography
Cultivated people are often quieter and more introverted. They appreciate great fashion and great fashion photography just as they love art and literature. Then why, so one might wonder, is so little fashion photography speaks to them in their own language?
When one looks at current trends and fads of fashion photography, one might think the chief buyer of fashion is a nerdy, suicidal teenager, who is barely able to read and write.
In contrast to this, the woman who spends most on fashion is upscale, educated, and 45 years old. There's a stage for every fashion presentation, so why not include fashion photography that speaks to those who actually buy fashion?
A mature and educated audience likes cultural references and complex stories. They would stop and take a closer look if there's more to a fashion photograph than just the pretty picture of a pretty girl in a pretty dress.
With the society moving towards individualization, anyone who wants to communicate with his target audience, will have to come up with stories and images that this target audiences wants to see. Fashion companies are starting to see this change in society, and those who act on it will be far ahead in the race when the others will only find out about it.
