Ways to stay original and beat the cliche
Would you have guessed where this is? This is Chinatown, Los Angeles. Are you surprised?
No little concrete pagodas or Chinese restaurants, no straw hats and Chinese signs... the picture of a black man as an angel painted on a garage door.
Beat the cliche. Over the head. With experience. I didn't know what to expect and I didn't care to find the cliches. So I just went.
I like the poetry of this scene. And even though the client decided on a different location for the shoot, this one has a special place in my list of locations for its poetic qualities.
I regularly go out and discover locations, even if there's not client waiting. I then create a story on my own for that location, and when a client needs a specific location, I am ready.
If the demands are very special, then I go out on another location expedition. I love to find new places, and it is astonishing how much the world can change just because you turned left where you had planned to turn right.
