The Headless Highway Man
The Stairs led to an old compound in the valley that was supposed to be haunted. The boys were just too excited and full of nonsense.
Just at the time of sunset, so went the legend, the dazzling figure of a nineteenth century highway man could be seen walking along the bottom of the valley, floating through trees and the ruins of a farm as if it all wasn't there. One noticeable detail is that the ghost has no head.
It was said that he was caught by the sheriff's men, and when he could not escape, he blew himself up with dynamite. His head was thrown towards the pursuers and killed the sheriff.
Since those times the headless highway robber is haunting the valley just at the time he had been encircled by the sheriff's men, looking for his head.
And they say, he would be satisfied with any head. Yours, for example, so that empty space between his shoulders would be filled.
